Facebook, Instagram & Messenger Experience Widespread Outage

Users across the globe reported issues accessing Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger on Friday, June 12, as Meta experienced a widespread service disruption affecting thousands of accounts.

According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, reports began surging shortly before 10 a.m. ET, with more than 100,000 Facebook users reporting problems at the peak of the outage. Thousands of additional reports were logged for Instagram and Messenger.

Users reported a variety of issues, including:

  • Being unexpectedly logged out of their accounts

  • Inability to log back in

  • Feed loading failures

  • Stories not appearing

  • Direct messages failing to send

  • Error messages such as "Something went wrong" and "An unexpected error occurred"

Meta Vice President of Communications Andy Stone said in a Friday post on social platform X: “We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it.”

While Facebook appeared to recover for some users within a few hours, many continued to experience intermittent issues across Instagram, Messenger, Threads, and other Meta-owned services.

Reports of disruptions were recorded in multiple countries, incl

uding the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, India, and parts of Europe and Southeast Asia, suggesting the outage was global in scale.

Meta acknowledged the issue and stated that teams were actively investigating the disruption. At the time of reporting, the company had not released an official explanation for the cause of the outage.

Technical experts note that outages of this nature can stem from a variety of issues, including authentication failures, backend infrastructure problems, network disruptions, or configuration errors.

Services have since begun returning to normal for many users, though some may continue to experience temporary issues as systems stabilize.

If you're still experiencing problems, Meta recommends checking for app updates, refreshing your connection, and monitoring official channels for updates.
